Poem - Soldier`s Rhyme

(Found this old poetry written by me when I was in the 9th grade. This is an improvised version of one of my most memorable works. Hope you enjoy reading this.)

Looks like the war is going to start

It`s time we soldiers play our part

I looked at my family and gave them a smile

Promising them that I would return in a while

On the chair sat my mother who is old

She was heartbroken, crying tears of gold

I asked her to smile and not be sad

And thanked her for giving me all that she had

I control my tears with eyes looking dry

But even still, I could hear her cry

Ignoring her I walked to my dad

Who's mental condition is extremely bad

He went to my room and brought me my gun

And claimed to be proud of his son

I went close to him and whispered in his ear

That I could sense my death coming near

I told him to continue to earn

For my family, if I failed to return

I wiped my tears and moved towards the gate

For the arrival of my troops, I sit and wait

Finally the bus did sound the horn

And from here, my journey was on

Once we soldiers reached our destination

We promised to lay our lives down for our nation

We worked hard all day and night

To emerge victorious in the fight

After a few days I received a call

The major had bad news for us All

2000 enemies were on their way

To capture our base by the end of the day

They had 60 tanks and we had none

But still, none of us had decided to run

We decided to finish them before the sun shines

And as a part of our plan, we laid tank mines

We called the air force hoping for a spark

But their planes couldn`t fly in the dark

In a few hours, we came face to face

Neither of the two sides moved from their place

The enemy finally aimed at us and fired

We too fought back, without being tired

For morning to arrive it was taking too long

I realized that in numbers, the enemy was strong

Both the sides had a strong aim

Wanting to achieve success and fame

With courage I made an attempt to stand

Holding a rifle in my hand

I also carried the Indian flag

And packed grenades in my bag

I charged at the enemy with a great speed

Protecting my country was my need

On top of enemy tanks did I go

Dropped grenades in them and watched them blow

Morning arrived and Air Force did come

Air support drove the enemy numb

Out of fear they began to run

Indicating that the battle was won

We raised the tricolor on this chance

The troops cried and began to dance

I went and stood on top of the hill

Being proud of my team mate`s will

I turned around and looked behind

My assault rifle did I try to find

It was afternoon and burning hot

By a sniper I was spot

A bullet exploded in my head

And on the floor, I lay dead

The soldiers immediately arrived there

Bombs being planted everywhere

I could see the place burn

But with their help, I could return

I took support of my friend`s arm

In spite bleeding, I looked calm

From my head blood began to flow

It was time for me to go

I was asked to hold on and wait

But deep down I knew it was getting too late

Before I could be brought to the hut

I collapsed on the floor with my eyes shut

At least I'm buried in my own land

Covered in the warmth of this beautiful sand

And though my body has been burned

I'll carry the respect I have earned....
